Abba once asked – what’s the name of the game? The answer for the ladies 2s has been inspiration. Starting with Anna at the European Curling Championships, Kate Richardson Walsh sending the team a good luck message, the Ladies 4s winning before us and Rids taking part in her first Cross fit challenge. The scene was set, boosted by some edgy (i.e. I don’t recognise it) warmup music.
However one person was suffering the icy chill more than most – Captain G forced into the thing she hates most – a gamble on the meet time. With the cold weather not allowing any standing around, most of the team respected the gamble – obvious candidate aside – and Jas is late regardless of any meet time.
Expectations were high for the pre match team talk, featuring the dynamic duo of Friz and Juan, we all hoped for a mash up – think of the great duos in the music world….salt and pepper, PJ and Duncan, the fresh Prince and DJ Jazz Jeff, Eric B and Rakin (ok I googled that one).
Friz led off with some well worked rhyme, Juan started strongly but was interrupted by a phone call – which he answered whilst giving his own team talk. If he were a player at Chelsea, this would be a £1000 fine but given the relatively weakness of the Peso against the Pound we negated a lower settlement.
And so to the game. It was a warm welcome back for Ali in goal, she’d certainly had her Weetabix making a string of early saves, bursting off her line and well supported by Ready making last ditch tackles. After the first 10 minutes we controlled most of the game but without really threatening to score.
This set the pattern for the rest of the game as we won numerous short corners without connecting on any, then we missed an open goal and G lost her mouth guard at half time, so we started the second half with 10.
Nati then extended this generosity, thinking she was being carded and walking towards the umpires to receive her Black Friday present – when the foul was clearly against her. AFA then sent through a great ball to the back post which was too good and missed by everyone. As time ticked away it looked as though we’d have to settle for a bore draw. However we won a corner just as the final whistle blew, a short debate led to the banker call – a corner at least 10 years in the making for most involved, the tension was heavy in the air, the crowd went silent and with perfect execution the banker indeed delivered – cue much shouting and jumping in the air like Tigger on a very happy day.
MOM: Ali
DOD: Nati – wanting a card that wasn’t hers
