Brombecks beat Canterbury and Sevenoaks but fall to Surbiton

Brombecks Boys U16 made the last four of the South Regional Final competition before finally succumbing 2-1 to Surbiton. The tournament had seen Brombecks pull off some excellent results beating both Canterbury and Sevenoaks in the same day.

The boys had been unbeaten up until the semi finals but a strong Surbiton team kept them at arms length for much of the game, with the boys failing to match the fine form that had taken them this far. However a rousing last 5 minutes saw the boys come back into the game and nearly find parity before the clock ran down on the tournament for the unbowed Brombecks lads.

The day had seen some excellent performances with the first game of the day seeing the boys pegged back with the last hit of the game striking Lucas MacKenzie on the face mask to give Guildford a penalty stroke and resulting in a 2-2 draw. Two fine goals from Sacha Jennings had put the boys in a strong position before a little inexperience brought Guildford back into the game before the drama of the final seconds.

Next up came Canterbury and a superb team performance, both defensively and offensively, resulted in Brombecks sealing a 3-0 win with a corner in the last few minutes. Sacha Jennings netting another goal and then debutant Harrison King taking a great first touch before finishing very coolly following passing link up play between the Hamilton brothers. With the older Hamilton then sealing the win with the final corner. In between the goals - Harry Carter had provided some excellent saves to deny the Canterbury penalty corner specialist.

Horsham were the next team put to the sword with an 8-0 win. It took the boys a while to get started before Jamie Hamilton's opening goal following a cool interception and rounding the goalkeeper to score into the empty net. The team then set off on a goal fest with Dan netting 4, Jamie adding a brace and Sacha and Jivan both getting on the score sheet.

East Grinstead then provided a stern test with the boys going ahead only to be pegged back and the game being seen out 1-1.

This meant a showdown with Sevenoaks for the semi finals, with the boys clearly equal to the task. The highlight of a very enjoyable 4-1 win must be a solo goal from Dan Hamilton from one end of the court to the other leaving several Sevenoaks players bewildered about what happened. With Dan and Lucas Mackenzie showing real court craft to keep the ball moving and Liam O'Leary and Femi Owolade-Coombes providing excellent cover in the middle - the boys always looked in control before Sevenoaks scored a last minute consolation.

A great day for the boys, and special mention to the whole team and especially to Paul Harries for managing the team so well on the day.

Harry Carter, Dan Hamilton, Lucas MacKenzie, Liam O'Leary, Jivan Phull, Sacha Jennings, Harrison King, Jamie Hamilton and Femi Owolade- Coombes making up the team. A special mention to Gabe Binns who was going to play but could not due to being laid low with flu.
