Sad news on the passing of long standing member - Barry Norman Frederick Mills

Nick Bluett8 Jun - 08:54

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Barry Mills after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Barry joined Beckenham in 1965 straight from school and played for the 1st XI for over 20 years captaining for two years in the mid Seventies. During the Seventies he also played a key role in the Kent County side which included winning the County Championship in 1975 and 1979. He subsequently played in the Veterans sides for Beckenham, and BromBecks for another 38 years until 2023.

During his hockey career he was a key member of the England Indoor team from 1975 to 1983 earning 56 caps. He earned a lot of other representative caps including the South Divisional side and in his later years he played in the England Veterans for over 25 years. He was undoubtedly one of the best players to ever play for the club.

Apart from his outstanding play he was the most friendly and sociable member of the club, very welcoming to new members and always ready with advice.

He enjoyed his social hockey and was invited to play for many sides including the Chimps, Ladykillers, Puritans and Members, touring around the world playing top level hockey.
He will be greatly missed by his many close friends at the club.

The family warmly invite those who would like to celebrate Barry’s life, to the funeral being held at St Peter’s Chapel, Exeter & Devon Crematorium, Topsham Road, EX2 6EU on Thursday 19th June at 2pm.

Following the service, the family welcome those attending back to Winslade Manor, Winslade Park Avenue, Manor Drive, Clyst St Mary, EX5 1FY.

It would mean a great deal to the family if those attending could wear a club tie. If you would like to take part in the arrival arch, please bring your hockey stick and arrive by 1.45pm.
It would be very helpful to the family to have an idea of numbers, so please if you are planning on attending, kindly email barbaramills@hotmail.co.uk

For those unable to attend, the service will be live-streamed via the below link:
